How Good is your School?
How much do you know about the schools in your area? How does your child's school stack up to others in your state or in the U.S.? I recently came across a website that helps you sort that all out. www.schoolmatters.com is a website created by Standard & Poor's to help parents search out the best school for their children. For me, it's been a very interesting search. My son is 7 1/2 months old and hardly ready for school, but it's on my mind already. I was able to locate a school in my area that fits my standards in less than five minutes. I was also able to see how all the schools in our district compare to one another.
The website shows reading and math proficiencies, how many students per teacher, and enrollment numbers, among other things. You can create your own charts to compare several schools, or you can delve into things like demographics and school safety.
I checked out a city we had considered living in, to see how their schools stacked up. It's a rural area, so not all the schools had all their info available. But I was able to get a pretty good idea of the schools there. It will definitely be a great help if we ever decide to move.
Whether you're looking for a new school, or you want to check up on the one your child attends now, this site is definitely worth a good hard look. I've placed a link on the sidebar of this blog, so it's always there for you to refer to.
